How to Register for a KRA PIN Online in 2026

Getting your KRA PIN is the first step toward formal employment, opening a bank account, or applying for a business license in Kenya. The process is entirely online and free.

How to Register for a KRA PIN for Individuals

Follow these steps to register your KRA PIN on the iTax portal.

1. Requirements for Registration

Before you begin, ensure you have the following details ready:

  • National ID Number.
  • Date of Birth.
  • Physical Address (including town/city, Building, and Street).
  • Valid Email Address (You must have access to this to receive the PIN certificate).

2. Access the iTax Portal

Go to the official iTax Website.

  • Look for the New PIN Registration link that says “To get a new PIN. Click here.”

3. Select Taxpayer Type

On the “e-Registration” page, you need to define who is registering.

  • Taxpayer Type: Select Individual.
  • Mode of Registration: Select Online Form.
  • Click Next.

4. Fill in Basic Information

This section validates your identity using your National ID.

  • Citizenship: Select Kenyan.
  • Employee’s profession: Select profession).
  • ID Number: Enter your National ID number.
  • Date of Birth: Enter it as it appears on your ID.
  • Click Next (The system will automatically fetch your name from the IPRS database).

5. Provide Address and Contact Details

Fill in your location and communication preferences.

  • Physical Address: Enter your County, District, Tax Area, and Postal details.
  • Mobile Number: Use a number that is active.
  • Email Address: Double-check this! Your PIN certificate will be sent here.
  • OTP Verification: Click “Send OTP.” Check your email, enter the code provided, and click Validate.

6. Select Tax Obligation

You must tell KRA what taxes you are registering for.

  • Obligation: Select Income Tax – Resident Individual.
  • Registration Date: This defaults to the current date.
  • Source of Income: Choose Yes then select Business, Rental, or Employment. If you are a student or unemployed, Choose No.”

7. Submit and Download

Finalize the process by solving the security arithmetic sum at the bottom.

  • Click Submit.
  • A notification will confirm successful registration.
  • Download the PIN Certificate from the link provided on the screen.
